About Dr Wai
Dr Desmond Wai obtained his basic medical degree (MBBS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1994. Subsequently, he obtained the Membership for the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, UK) and Master of Medicine (MMED, Internal Medicine) in 1998, and completed his specialist training in 1999. Following that, Dr Wai completed his advanced specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2002.
In 2002, Dr Wai did his fellowship in Hepatology under the mentorship of world renowned Hepatologist, Professor Anna Lok in the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA). During the one-year fellowship in the States, Dr Wai has several publications in top medical journals like Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and American Journal of Gastroenterology.
From 2003, Dr Wai was a consultant hepatologist and gastroenterologist with the National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore. Dr Wai has since published extensively on liver transplantation, viral hepatitis B and C, and endoscopy. To-date, Dr Wai has more than 80 medical articles in peer reviewed medical journals, including top journals like Hepatology, American Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Alimentary Pharmaceutics and Therapeutics.
Dr Wai is a frequent speaker at local and regional medical conferences on liver diseases, liver transplantation, as well as on other aspects of digestive diseases. Dr Wai's interviews and articles, covering various topics in on liver and digestive diseases, are also frequently featured in local and international media.
Because of his expertise, knowledge and extensive contribution in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dr Wai has bagged many awards. The most recent is the Mother Theresa Award, given by National Public Library, Dhaka, Bangladesh 2011, for his contribution in the field of Hepatology.
In 2006-2011, Dr Wai was with the Asian Centre for Liver Diseases and Transplantation (ACLDT) at Gleneagles Hospital as a transplant hepatologist and gastroenterologist, where he provided liver transplant care to more than 100 live donor liver transplant patients.
